Youth Soccer Coaching:
Sold on: 1V1 and Under 10 Girls

By Danny Rabalais
President of Red Bluff YSL

I attended one of your clinics in Redding last year, and was surprised when you promoted the 1V1 concept. I coach little girls in the Under-10 division, so I thought it would be difficult to get them to understand the procedures you had showed us.

I took what I learned at the clinic and switched it around, so that the younger kids would understand it. Using the same concepts, I started out every practice for about 15 to 20 minutes using the 1V1. What I found was very interesting.

I had several girls that had never played soccer before and several with various years of experience. The 1V1 concept was a tremendous tool for the team. The skill levels soared in comparison to my previous teams, and brought the comprehension level up quickly. What I mean is, the girls understood much sooner, the basics of game situations, and were able to react quicker in the game.

As a coach, I was much happier with the ease in which I was able to explain tactics after during the 1V1 games. I had other coaches as well as parents remark at how quickly the skill levels had risen on the team. Needless to say, I am sold on the 1V1 training and will continue to promote it.

I look forward to any further information on the topic.
