"Pre-game Practice"

By Koach Karl

Koach Karl,

I coach U-9 boys with 13 players on the team. I have a significant difference in talent among the players, some who trip over balls and others who can run at full speed dribbling the ball under control and most boys in-between.

Koach Karl's' response:
(KD) - Very typical of this age group - after all - they are all beginners...!

What drills or how would you run a practice with such a large difference of skills among players.

KD - I hate drills and so do the players of this age. I love soccer and so do the players of this age. I will attach the 'new' flow chart that will show you 'how to' run a practice session. Keep in mind - the weak player needs to play against stronger players -they need role models. The stronger player needs to play against weaker players to experiment with 'new' techniques and moves. In other words do not look at skill level -have them play with and against each other. Then allow them to experiment and fail their way to success.

A second question I have is most the boys are not very aggressive during game time, I feel this is because they are somewhat intimated by playing strangers, but yet when I have a scrimmage at the end of a practice they are all very aggressive with each other, any thoughts.

KD - You are absolutely correct...! They are in a 'new' environment on game day. Probably have more spectators probably have their uniforms on. Probably have an official referee, etc... In other words they are (not yet) accustomed to game day. You will need some PATIENCE and give them time to get use to 'what will happen' on game day. Until they can have enough experiences under their belt you should expect them to be timid and unsure of themselves. I'm sure you would feel the same way when trying to skydive for the first time...!

My last question, prior to the start of a game I have a 30 minute warm, lots of simple passing drills, but are there any drills you have found most beneficial for a pre game warm up to get them ready to play.

KD - Again with the drills - Children love to play soccer...In practice train them what they will do on game day. Socialize - Warm up - and PLAY a small sided game! As many (so called) experts will tell you - 'the game is the best teacher' and I agree with them - have the kids play a small sided game for at least five minutes before the game - this should get them ready for the weather conditions, competition and maybe even the surroundings...!

Hope this will be of some help and I look forward to your experimenting with these ideas and letting me know how well they work for you and your players...!

Your FUNdamentalKoach,
Karl
