By Graham Kennedy, Calgary, Foothills Coaching Director "The modifications include shortening the distance between the serves to eight yards to accommodate the majority of our school gyms. Most of our rented gymnasiums are of a standard size that the local school board adopted during construction during the 70's. The majority seem to be 35-40 ft in width, tight for the serves. I have turned the serves length-ways in some gyms, getting three serves across the width of the gym (six players) and added Small Sided Games at the other end for the other 6-7 players (most of indoor teams are 12-13 players). We then switch at half. Not the greatest of solutions but until we get some bigger quarters I am stuck with improvisation. WE even use the school stages. The SAIT gymnasium where you conducted your coaching session is a rarity for our club. We are working hard to get a new space of our own. All of the coaches who have adopted the FUNdamental approach have liked it. I am presenting it to our club board of directors on Tuesday night in my annual technical report. I am asking them to adopt your 9-step FUNdamental approach club-wide along with mandatory training on the method. I will keep you posted. I love the vs. approach and I have re-designed out evaluation process to include it. I have been working very hard since you left to put together an improved plan for our annual evaluations. I am excited about it. FUNdamental Reader:. As a reminder "the (vs.) approach" occurs during all 'competitive portions of our Nine Step Practice Session. That is, during the 1 vs. 1 games. During the Competitive Small Sided Games. And when they are playing the Competitive Scrimmage we ask the coach to be: Verbally Silent. As the players are competing, experiment and playing their way to success the coach is asked to: Strictly Observe and Just Take Notes on weaknesses observed which need to be worked on in future practice sessions. Also, Dear Reader, if you have made 'Modifications' in our Nine Step Approach to fit into a gym or other unusual setting. We would 'love' to share your adjustments with our readership. Please send us your ideas and modifications. We will, continue, to keep you posted on Coach Kennedy's progress
