By Roby Stahl, Director of Coaching, Ohio South Youth Soccer Association Having dreams is one thing. An important "thing." But aggressively taking steps to fulfil those dreams is still another. Without the dreams, the steps aren't necessary. But without the steps, the dreams aren't fulfilled. You know, many athletes might not be lazy. But they still don't have in mind the tangible steps they need to take to fulfill their dreams. Our society doesn't inspire us to dream, let alone prepare us to think about the steps we need to take. That's one reason you're so important to your team, and to your community. In sports, you can help your athletes focus on the dreams, AND the steps. It's true that a journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. It's also true that your athletes might need help with knowing what that first step is. And the ones to follow. Here's the thing. Don't tell them what steps to take. Help them think for them selves. But, help them! I believe that the best time to do this is during practices, one on one. Sure, it will take time. But it will be one of the best investments of your time during the season.
