"Pass the Ammunition, Please!"

By Koach Karl

Mr. Dewazien,

I read your article with great interest in the NSCAA magazine and I am hoping you can be of some assistance. I am Director of Coaching of a large, average to in Cincinnati, OH.

I have my A license, former assistant coach in the A-Leaguue, will be doing the National Youth this summer, etc... Attached is a layout of how I set up my 9's last Spring 2000 in my first season as Director. I set this up simply using what I thought best for 9 and 10 year olds based on my experience; I did not read books, look at websites, etc.. It was not an easy sell though.

I hope to continue the program for the 10's, but am getting resistance from the parents in the winning department. In the fall, we had 2 teams (went 8-7-1); this Spring 3 teams (cut no girls 10 players per team). The current combined record is 7-11-1, and parents are talking about leaving and going to other clubs. The club system is very fragmented here, probably 6 other clubs within a 5 mile radius. All the other clubs set up A,B, and C teams; thus when we play an A team, it's not always pretty, though it has gone from 9-0 scores in the fall to 5-1 scores this Spring.

The girls are developing and becoming better players, but the parents cannot see the forest through the trees. They are using the pretext of players not training with their Sunday teams as the way in, but it all goes back to the winning thing. There is a meeting set up for this Thursday, and I am looking for a little more ammunition. Two things: 1) What do you think of how I have set up the program? and 2) Can you help with more ammunition? I can send you more correspondences and/or material if needed. Thanks for your time, and as you can see, I have time constraints. Thanks.

DAN SMITH

(As a result of this email Koach Karl had a brief conversation resulted in Coach Dan feeling comfortable with his program - a few modifications were discussed.)

The focus was put back on the individuals development and away from the parents expectations. We agreed that the potential of an individual cannot be surmised until after puberty. Michael Jordan being cut from his high school basketball team came to mind.

We discussed not separating players by ability. That the stronger players needed to play weaker players to experiment with 'newly' introduced techniques. That the weaker players needed to play against stronger players for role modeling. And both can be given 'points of refinement' and compliment for improvement. That is, the coaches response to players development may be more influential than the score of any practice game.

Also, not dwelling on what other clubs are doing rather working as hard as possible on his cliental was covered. It is a fact that the best coach these players will have this coming season is you. Since you will not have any other players this year - you should believe that these are the best players you will ever have. Both sides need come to the realization that we only have ourselves to work with this year - so why not agree that we are the best in the world for each other...!

We are providing you our readers with Dan Smith's program. Your comments are welcome. Also, if you are interested in coach Karl's point of view on a subject? Just let us know - maybe, one of these days you will be talking to him - personally, and resolving your dilemma together...!
